Do not ask a screen opening to stand in for a finished-product particle distribution.
Percentile, maximum and aperture answer different questions
A Dv percentile describes a point in a volume-based distribution. It is not a maximum particle dimension. A refiner aperture describes a machine component, not the resulting distribution.
- Label the reported metric and units.
- Keep sieve or screen observations separate.
- Avoid converting between unrelated methods.
Make the sample representative
Agree where the sample comes from, how it is prepared and whether handling changes the structure before measurement. Treat long fibres and irregular fragments explicitly.
- Define sample location and collection period.
- Record dilution, dispersion or preparation steps.
- Retain the method and basis with each result.
Write a usable trial request
Ask for the proposed refining configuration and matched product evidence. A percentile target alone leaves coarse outliers and the buyer’s retained-fibre requirement unresolved.
- Specify the coarse-material acceptance observation.
- Compare inlet, refined product and reject.
- Review repeatability before accepting a configuration.
